Product Description
The Arduino Motor Shield is based on the L298, a bridge driver for controlling inductive loads such as relays, magnets, DC and stepper motors. The Arduino Motor Shield enables the control of two DC motors, whereby the speed and the direction of rotation of both motors can be controlled independently. It is also possible to measure the power consumption of each individual motor. The Shield is compatible with TinkerKit, which means projects can be created quickly and easily by connecting a TinkerKit module.
Power and voltage supply
The Arduino Motor Shield must be powered from an external source. The integrated L298 IC on the shield has two inputs for the power supply. One is for the logic, the other for the operation of the motors. Using independent inputs makes sense, as the power consumption of a motor usually exceeds the maximum power output of a USB port.
The external power supply (not USB) can be implemented via a suitable power supply unit or batteries. The appropriate adapter can be plugged into the 2.1mm connection (positive pole inside), which is mounted on the Arduino board connected to the motor shield. Alternatively, the external power supply can also be connected directly to the motor shield via screw terminals.
- Vin on the screw terminal designates the supply voltage of the motor. A connected external power supply also supplies the Arduino board with power. By disconnecting the "Vin Connect" jumper, the power supply is used exclusively for the motor.
- GND on the screw terminal designates the ground connection.
The motor shield can handle a maximum of 2A per channel and a maximum of 4A overall.
